AstroTurf: The Beginning

In the 1960s, a company called Chemstrand was looking for new types of artificial play areas for sports activities. During the research and development process, the company sought to create a kind of “sustainable carpet". In exploring this possibility, they were approached by the Ford Foundation, which was looking for a solution for urban sports areas. Between 1962 and 1966, Chemstrand worked feverishly on this application.

A Solution for Urban Sports Players

Living in the city brings many benefits, but the drawback is that there are several grassy areas where people can play and enjoy sports. This is especially true for conscientious parents who want their children to run, play and do enough exercise. Inspired by this need, the Ford Foundation prompted Chemstrand to launch its research into the creation of a sustainable urban sports area. Many types of surfaces were created in the 5 years when Chemstrand started working on this idea, and it was one of those types that became the artificial grass we know today.

AstroTurf Is Born

The most important event in the history of synthetic grass took place in 1966. It was then that Houston Astrodome-the home of the Houston Astros of baseball and the Houston Oilers of football-built the Chemgrass surface for the first time. Shortly thereafter, several other major stadiums began to use the material, which was renamed "AstroTurf" in 1967 and patented in the USA. In the following years, this remarkable Material was used by countless sports facilities, schools, and other places, to create a safe and consistent playing surface for adults and children. There is no doubt that artificial grass is here to stay.
