The RealReal X Gucci

Photo by Christian Wiediger on Unsplash

Gucci continues to be one of the hottest brands season after season as creative director Alessandro Michele steers the brand into his visionary success. This current cruise wear season featured the brand's usual iconic imagery as a diverse cast of fresh-faced models wore the seasons designs in an open farm. It was described as the after party of a rave where farm animals became part of the gag. This sounds like it would be anything but glamorous, but the brand is always at a contradiction of sorts in its branding. Past campaigns have featured other worldly creatures from space in embrace with the usual models in horn rimmed glasses. In short, Gucci has made the bizarre unique and profitable with their unique take on the fashion industry.

The RealReal has been one of the premiere online resale sights since its inception. It has a revolving door of Gucci products in store that range from vintage to current collection. The most popular items are usually its infamous "GG" buckle belt or anything from its Marmont line of leather goods. In fact, the Marmont is one of the few bags that retains a high retail value as it ages. These bags are always in demand, and they show no sign of slowing down any time soon. This makes the RealReal an optimal place to find your favorite styles for less as you build up your collection of luxury goods.

If you are in the market for a Marmont bag, then you should keep in mind the colour and style you want to have. The classic quilted styles will always be available in basic colours like tan, pink, black or red. However, if you want one that is more unique than consider one of the seasonal releases that are usually made in velvet or suede while embellished with crystals. This is the best time to pick up a limited release purse that you might have missed when it first came out. Set up your notifications from the RealReal so you know when the latest new arrivals are posted on the website.

If you prefer a different style of bag, then consider the Dionysus. This well-structured bag also comes in several colors and shapes depending on the season. However, it is usually featured in the classic "GG" logo print. It also will feature a hard chain link strap in pewter along with the reverse snake logo buckle. This are its prized identifying characteristics that make it an iconic bag if you want to stand out. It usually retails for several thousand dollars, but it might be cheaper online with a second-hand website like the Real Real. This is your opportunity to find the best deals on your favorite luxury brands and handbags that are sure to amp your style. Fashion month is finally here, and you want to look your best. Now, you can thanks to all the great deals you will find on Marmont and Dionysus bags online at the Real Real.

Things I Learnt In January

So basically, I'm shit at sticking to monthly posts but I do really like picking up this blog post when I've got plenty to share and recommend.  It's only a week or so late but here's the things I learnt in January...

The last week of January is too late to wish anyone a "Happy New Year". I thought it was polite and a bit of a conversation starter with clients that I'd not spoken to since before Christmas but most of them were a little taken aback at my late attempt of etiquette. When do you stop saying it?

Mo Farah's weekly training schedule is nothing short of amazing. I normally write about running stuff on a dedicated blog post (you can read the January Run Down here) but when I saw Mo Farah's typical weekly training regime, I thought you might like to have a look. I'm exhausted just reading how many hours and miles he clocks up but it is his job, after all!

Retro is all the rage! I absolutely remember the first perfume that I owned. My mum bought it for me from one of those 80s 'perfume parties' that sold copies of well known scents for a fraction of the price.  Mine was a dupe of an Oscar de la Renta fragrance and I'm sure it's shaped my choice in perfume ever since. So I was really pleased to see that Aqua Manda creator, Christopher Collins has acted as an advisor on the relaunch of two of their original scents - Aqua Citra (a citrus & spicy aroma) and Aqua Manda (a citrus and floral smell). And whilst they do have undertones of a 70s vibe (you had to be there.... trust me) they also smell very fresh and new.  Give them a try!

Losing weight and keeping it off is harder than expected.  I'm not about to slip into a yo-yo diet routine because I worked too hard to lose two stone last year but, after putting a few pounds back on over Christmas, I've plateaued a bit and found it harder to get my head back in the game for the consistent losses that I was achieving a few months ago.  What's really helped (apart from making sure I actually attend my Slimming World classes) is two things:

  • Drinking XLS Medical Tea which is the UK's first clinically proven tea to help with weight loss and has a low caffeine content.  Now, I'm not usually a fan of 'faddy foods and drinks' that promise the earth but with limited results but this 'weight loss tea' includes Litramine which binds up to 28% of the dietary fats in the stomach, contains no laxatives and no preservatives. The recommendation is to drink it three times a day (after meals) but I'm sticking to twice a day due to needing to a variety of flavours throughout the day. So far, so good - I'm finding that I'm not eating huge portions of food (even though I can on the Slimming World plan) which is going to pay dividends in the long run.
  • Listening to my Thinking Slimmer 'pod' - I've been a fan of neurolinguistic programming for a long time and Thinking Slimmer is exactly this, coupled with unconscious persuasion, neuroscience, modern psychology and behavioural science to help retrain the brain to think differently about food and dieting in general. I've found it has also massively helped with my confidence and (without giving away too many spoilers), I've been interviewed by founder, Sandra Roycroft-Davis, which can be seen in a video soon and we've been plotting away behind the scenes to set up a challenge to help with goal setting. I'm really excited about it all!

I'm still enjoying receiving my Birchbox each month. Each time I share an photo of my monthly treat I have to put "hashtag not sponsored" because I don't want my friends to think I'm being paid or bribed to share what I'm receiving.  I really love getting the monthly treats through the door and it gives me the opportunity to try out new products that I wouldn't normally have bought. Every time someone uses my referral code to sign up, they receive £5 off their first box and I receive a £5 voucher for the Birchbox store so this month I've bought some Dr Paw Paw lip balm and some Beautaniq Beauty brow gel.  Six months ago, I was oblivious to either of these two products and now I have no idea how I managed without them!  (PS, if you want to use my Birchbox code to sign up then click here).

You never forget how good Yazoo are/were.  I spotted this tweet a while back praising Alison Moyet's voice on a old John Peel session from 1982.

and this query led me to this YouTube video... and it's amazing! It's worth 16 minutes of your time!

Finally, I'm in the process of relaunching my Facebook page. It's a bit of mish-mash of content at the moment but I'm going to use it as an extension of this blog - so a bit of a mind-overspill of blog content I love, memes, videos and everything else... Follow me on Facebook here (ignore the name - it's undergoing a change)

It'd be good to hear what you've learnt or tried out over the past few weeks.  Drop your tips and discoveries in the comments or give me a shout on Twitter!

The January Run Down - PLUS I'm A Bodytek Ambassador

First the excuses and the mini-updates...

I hadn't written a "January Run Down" until now because there didn't seem to be much to say (I'm wrong, as usual). For me, the beginning of the year is always a bit of a slow start and, up until a couple of weeks ago, I hadn't entered any races.

Me at Clitheroe parkrun | The January Run Down : Running updates from January plus sharing the news that I'm now a bodytek ambassador

My first run of the year was a mid-week, daytime run which is a HUGE novelty but I had an extra day off work and managed to get out with a few of the running gang and have a lovely six mile plod around Samlesbury. Nothing else exciting happened apart from occasionally leading the 11-minute mile group for Club Runs on Monday and Wednesday and joining in with some longer runs with my friends who are training for the Lisbon Half Marathon in March.  I currently haven't got a half marathon booked but wanted to increase my mileage "just in case". After all my protesting last year, I'm learning to appreciate the longer runs, but only when I have good people to run with - I seriously doubt I have the discipline to go out and tackle anything longer than 5 miles on my own.

I assisted with another parkrun takeover too. This time, Blackburn Road Runners successfully managed the Clitheroe Castle parkrun on 19th January.  Here's a video of our morning at the castle (I have a small cameo at the end. I was Volunteer Coordinator this time - I just promoted myself to Run Director when I saw a spare bib)!

(video credit : Shafiq Khan)

The snow that covered the UK prevented me from going out on a few runs so the mileage covered in January was 57 miles. I'm aiming to match or better that in February and I'm hoping to attend a couple of track speed sessions that my running club organises - maybe this will help towards one of my 2019 goals (a sub-30 minute parkrun)?

Races I have booked are

  • Stanley Park 10k - 24th February
  • Muddy Bottom 9 mile trail run - 31st March (I've still no idea how I got talked into this one)
  • Fleetwood 10k - 7th April
  • Wesham Summer 10k - 22nd May

Races I want to book are

  • Freckleton Half Marathon - 16th June
  • Southport Half Marathon - 30th June

But now, onto the exciting news!

The January Run Down : Running updates from January plus sharing the news that I'm now a bodytek ambassador | bodytek logo

I've been invited to become an ambassador for a brand new UK fitness-wear company called bodytek who fully support sustainable and recyclable materials for their products which was the main reason I wanted to work with them. I've been sent their 'Women's Winter Training Bundle' to try out and, so far, I'm impressed.

The January Run Down : Running updates from January plus sharing the news that I'm now a bodytek ambassador | bodytek Womens Winter Training Bundle

The running top is long-sleeved which is perfect for wearing under a long or short sleeved training top on these cold nights but the most exciting part for me was that it is made from bamboo.  I recently discovered bamboo pyjamas and I'd literally live in them if I could - bamboo keeps you warm when it's cold and cool when it's warm. I have no idea how it works but I'm liking this magic material!  And it's the same with my running top - the material is natural and anti-microbial so it stops you from sweating without the clothing actually smelling.  Mind blowing! There's also a hidden zipped pocket in the seam which is ideal for a car or locker key and a bank card.

Next in the bundle is a stainless steel bottle.  I was recently researching this new trend in stainless steel bottles (more magic - keeping cold drinks cold for up to 48 hours and hot drinks hot for up to 24 hours) because they look sleek and functional.  This bottle holds just over a pint of liquid and is the perfect size for a gym bag or for carrying in your handbag to remind yourself to keep hydrated. The bottle itself is 100% stainless steel, made from recycled materials - and is also 100% recyclable itself!

Lastly in the bundle, is the drawstring gym bag with the bodytek logo and #feelthechange slogan printed on.  It's made from durable cotton and its big enough to hold all your essentials.

The bodytek blog details each item but I also wanted to mention that the owners of bodytek have been to meet the farmers of the cotton plants and have seen their certification of eco-friendly practices. They have also been to the factory where the clothes are made to ensure ethical working conditions and fair pay. Again, this was important to me when helping promote a brand - it's more than just looking and feeling good whilst reviewing products. You have to take it back a few steps, don't you?

So look out for my recommendations. All my links to the bodytek website are affiliate links (this means that I make a small amount of commission on any products you buy if you use my link - it doesn't cost you any extra). If you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them for you.

So that's it for January!  A bit of running, some future plans to fit in with my 2019 goals which I mentioned on Instagram. The ones that are running related are:

❓ Lose another 2 stone to take my total weight lost to over 4 stone
❓ A sub-30 minute 5k or parkrun
❓ A 2h30m half marathon

And I'll finish with this video that I saw on Facebook.  I want to be ALL of these women when I grow up!

How to Upscale Your Downtime

With busy working lives, families to see and friends to connect with, it’s a little wonder anybody has any free time in this 100mph world we live in. My belief is that we should all cherish a little downtime, once in a while, to recharge the batteries and get the endorphins running; whatever that means for you. From the energetic to the downright slovenly, here are some ideas for how you can maximise your spare time and perhaps enjoy some self-improvement at the same time!

Dance to the Music

Let’s face it: the idea of running or hitting the job doesn’t appeal to everybody, and that’s fair enough. But exercise is proven to be good for us in so many ways, from burning off the calories from those late-night chocolate hits to releasing endorphins and hormones such as serotonin and norepinephrine, which are well-known in scientific circles for improving mood and promoting feelings of positivity.

There is still this perception that exercise has to be hard, and that you have to suffer in some way. But that doesn’t have to be the case, and even just walking more quickly and animatedly to the shops can help to burn additional calories.

One form of exercise that the majority of us love is dancing, and remember you don’t need to reach for the neon leggings and glowsticks to get involved. Few things in life are more enjoyable than dancing in the kitchen to our favourite songs, so crank up the volume and get active!
Something for Nothing

There was a story in the newspapers last year about a man who won more than £20,000 simply for entering free competitions. Just think about how you could spend that cash, from an extension on your house to a dream holiday in the sun or a super-fast car to get you from A to B in style.

The gentleman in question didn’t do anything particularly taxing or time-consuming; indeed, in 95% of cases it simply involves entering some personal information into a form or answering a simple question. And the prizes range from cash payouts to event tickets, holidays and designer clothes. What’s not to love!? There’s a great article on ‘comping’ on the MoneySavingExpert website.

There are other angles you could try too. If you are a sports fanatic, you could try free-to-enter contests like the Super6 (football) or ITV7 (horse racing), where you can win huge prizes just for guessing the correct winners of a match or race. And if you love nothing more than a trip to the casino, there are tons of freebies up for grabs on the web; such as the newest online casino Wildz, who reward their new players with bonus cash, free spins and more.

Winning something, when you haven’t invested time or money into it, really is a fantastic way to spend your free time.

Read My Mind

For many of us, our learning days are over as soon as we leave school as a wide-eyed teenager. But maybe we should never stop trying to learn, whether it’s a new skill or information that could help us in a personal or professional way.

Source: Pexels via Pixabay
There are so many good books out there about psychology and mindset, and these really can both entertain and prove educational.  Why not spend your downtime learning about the world, our history on this planet or perhaps even how the human mind works. Worst case scenario you’ll be a hit at the next pub quiz, but maybe you will learn something about yourself or others that you can put to good use.

How to Find Healing in Relationships After Trauma

It is unfortunate that some of us suffer trauma from various experiences including past relationships. Post-trauma effects make it difficult for people to focus in life, and settling down in a relationship can be an uphill task. Since all people deserve a healthy relationship, you need to understand the best ways to deal with this experience. All experts strive to make people understand that life must move on and a person deserves to be happy no matter what. When engaging in a relationship, your past trauma should not be a hindrance to its success.

Love Yourself More

Before you let anyone else love you, you need to love yourself. Do not let what happened in the past ground you with depression. Start by giving yourself the best you deserve including vacations and the best shopping you can afford as you look for your perfect match. If the primary cause of the past trauma is a bad relationship that even threatened your life, the best thing is to fall in love again with yourself.

Let Yourself See the Beautiful Future Ahead

No matter what happened, the future still has a lot to offer. Apart from getting a new relationship, which should remain an open option, you have a career to take care of, family and friends to interact with, as well as the entire world to enjoy. All of these things should make you forget and begin the strategies of settling into a new relationship. This should be the time to focus on matters that will shape your future for the best. If you need help, your friends will be glad to assist. Better still, find a trained counselor.

Choose Your Partner Carefully

There are many avenues of getting a perfect match. Today, online dating websites such as bring people together in a straightforward way. They encourage using profiles that give more information about you so that interested people can connect with you. If you are not comfortable looking at any of these platforms, social media also brings people together, but you need to take your time getting to knowing each other. Additionally, you can encourage socializing at events and other functions as you look for a perfect partner.

A Good Relationship Heals

If you take enough time to choose the perfect partner, then your life should start to become brighter. Healthy relationships can heal any trauma, but only when the affected partner allow this to happen. It is recommended that you open up to your newly found partner as soon as possible to avoid disappointments when a stronger bond has been created. They will have a lot to encourage you with including their presence in your life.

Allow Your Partner to Show Love and Compassion

One can choose what they will receive from their partner. If you decide to remain dull and haunted by past traumatic experiences, it may become difficult for them to show love and compassion. When you open your heart for them, then they will start a healing process in you through their love and care. There is nothing better than finding a healing relationship after suffering trauma, but the larger role is played by you.

The Chapel Of Bones

The Chapel Of Bones, Alcantarilha, Portugal

When I agreed to go to church on Christmas Eve, this isn't exactly what I had in mind. However, we were experiencing a less-than-traditional Christmas by spending it away from our family, in a hotel in the Algarve.

We had heard about the Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones) in Alcantarilha and worked out that it was about 20 minutes drive away from where we were staying.  Alcantarilha is a beautiful, traditional Portuguese village full of colourful houses on winding, steep roads that are just wide enough for one car to drive down. The cafes and bars display local sporting trophies and team photos and everyone knows everyone.

But right at the top of the main street, next to the main church, is the Capela dos Ossos - built in the 16th Century, the walls are covered in thousands of bones and skulls from the old churchyard cemetery. There  is supposed to be a wooden cross displayed on the small altar however that wasn't there on the day we visited and I'm not sure if it has been removed permanently.

It may seem a bit macabre but it's not really gory - especially when you find out that it was built to preserve the remains of their dead. There are a few boards outside the chapel which detail the local history - a really interesting read. The church was also erected in the 16th Century and the altar displays an 18th Century wooden sculpture of Nossa Senhora da Conceicao (the Immaculate Conception).

Advice : The chapel is in a small village about 20-30 minutes drive outside of Albufeira.  We were expecting it to be the size of a church but it is very much an annex next to the main Catholic church. This isn't a day trip out - more of an hour's mooch around in an afternoon - however the village is very picturesque - so visit if you decide to hire a car and have a drive around the region. Alternatively, it will cost approximately €20 each way in a taxi.

How does money affect relationships?

Money makes the world go round but it shouldn’t just be for getting from one week to the next without touching your overdraft. Instead, you should see money as the best way to achieve your goals and ambitions as well as have a little bit of fun.

Budgeting is a really important part of money management as it can be used to project your future worth as well as allocate funds for specific areas of your life. While lots of people think of budgeting as a negative thing that only happens when you are falling short, you should think of it instead as lots of dedicated pots of money, all for you to spend wisely. In short, everyone should have a sensible budget.

Within your budget, you should account for all your basic needs such as rent, groceries and bills as well as your financial goals including savings and investments. But, you should also give yourself some money to play with. This money can only come out of your disposable income (don’t choose fun over electricity!) but it will show you what you have to spend on luxuries like dining out, going to the cinema or playing online games - whatever floats your boat.

Shepherds Friendly recently carried out some research looking into how does money affect relationships and collaborated with relationship expert, Becky Spelman, to analyse the results.  There's a full infographic below but here's a few surprising results:

  • 36.1% of women think money plays a part in how attractive they find a partner whereas only 24% of men do.
  • 68% of men agree men should pay on a date night however only 41.9% of women agree that men should pay.
  • 31.4% of women think that how much their partner earns is important in terms of pursing a relationship - 22.4% of men agree.

When you have a budget in place, you get to decide how you spend it each month. However, just because you know that this money is essentially for fun, doesn’t mean that you should stop looking for the best deal or spend for the sake of it. If you can manage your budget smartly, keep your bad habits reigned in and maybe even earn a little extra on the side, you can give yourself a fantastic lifestyle without breaking the bank.

This is a collaborative post. For more information please see my disclosure policy.

When tech dreams become reality

Ever looked at a new piece of technology and thought that it wouldn’t look out of place in a science fiction film? Actually, as it turns out, that's where it may have come from...

As the speed of development in science and technology grows ever faster, the latest gadgets are becoming more accessible than ever. Once the preserve of the young and rich, more and more people are able to play a part in this technological revolution – including the elderly.

According to the Office for National Statistics, there has been a sizeable increase in the number of people age over 65 who are using a computer on a daily basis. The benefits of technology for this demographic are clear; it’s much easier to stay in touch with friends and family (leading to reduced feelings of loneliness and isolation) and access services which may be of benefit.

Just as the technology of the present inspires older generations, so films of the past are inspiring exciting new technologies. Films and technology have long been linked. The science fiction area of the 1950s and 1960s added fuel to the fire of the space race and now technology that was once the stuff of dreams is entering the realm of reality.

Taking inspiration from TechRadar’s 10 amazing bits of future movie tech that already exist – here is a snapshot of what happens when tech dreams become reality.

Yesterday’s dreams are tomorrow’s gadgets

It’s funny to think that the tablet computer first made an appearance in the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey - just one example of how the dreams of yesterday are the gadgets of tomorrow. In fact, many of our favourite tech goodies were actually the work of fiction before some intelligent soul saw fit to make all our dreams come true.

From "clap on" lights in Bruce Almighty to a personal toast dispenser in Wallace and Gromit, once upon a time the thought of being able to control your household objects was only a dream but now it's available in almost every home with gadgets such as Chromecast and Amazon Echo.

Everything is super

Incredibly, the US army is even attempting to develop an exoskeleton suit not dissimilar to the one worn by Iron Man. With superheroes a popular topic in both written media and film, it’s clear that future technological developments will put a clear focus on all things ‘super’.This suit isn’t the only item from films to be attempted in reality either. The hand from the Terminator movies, for example, could mark a huge step forward for prosthetic limbs as experts look at ways to bring this element of fiction to life.

Unparalleled freedom

Even the sci-fi staple of a futuristic driverless car may not be that far from making its debut on real- life roads. Google has already having tested a prototype of this technology on the streets of San Francisco, while Ford are developing a car that takes control of the steering if you’re about to crash. We might not quite be whizzing around on hoverboards or travelling through time, but technology that awes us in the cinema is slowly beginning to infiltrate the real world and prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that anything really is possible when you put your mind to it.

When tech dreams become reality - Have you ever looked at a new piece of technology and thought that it wouldn’t look out of place in a science fiction film? Actually, as it turns out, that's where it may have come from...

I've moved away from my Filofax (shock, horror - I know!) and into a travelers notebook system.  I've talked about these before because they suit my need to carry a diary and a notebook with me as a BOAT (Book Of All Things).  I've sized up my travelers notebook this year and I'm using the Trekker from Jofelo that I reviewed here.  I bought my own inserts from The Journal Shop (week on one page with notes) which I use as a diary and a bullet journal and then I have a separate notebook for personal phone numbers, information I need to regularly refer to, braindumps - that sort of thing.

Chorley FM Planner

I was lucky enough to secure a monthly Saturday morning radio show with Chorley FM last year (maybe soon to be twice-monthly?) with my running pal, Rowena. It's called Wake Up To The Weekend. Now, Rowena tends to wing it a little bit but I have to plan every show with a rough outline of what we can talk about.  I use this beautiful notebook from Castelli which has lined paper.  I use a double page spread for each show - left had side for time splits, right hand side for extra notes. I jot down notes throughout the month then plan everything properly a couple of day before the show.

Effici Planner

I was sent the Effici Planner to review a couple of weeks ago.  It's a hard-cover, undated, A4, three month planner designed to help you become more productive and achieve your personal and business goals by tracking habits, defining daily goals and tackling to-do lists.

Efficiency : noun, plural ef·fi·cien·cies. the state or quality of being efficient, or able to accomplish something with the least waste of time and effort; competency in performance [from]

It's a quarterly subscription service so every three months you are sent a new planner with separate daily habit trackers (I wish these were bound into the book but I guess they are separate so that they are portable and can be used on the go.  The pack is designed to look professional so that you can take it anywhere and maximise productivity easily.

I'm actually going to use mine for my running and weight-loss journey. I can meal plan, route plan, track eating/drinking habits, keep a record of my running times and look back to ensure that I'm always striving for improvement by seeing what works and what doesn't. I'm also going to use it to record my three positive actions each day in line with using my Thinking Slimmer slimpods.

Family Calendars

I originally bought Shaifq Khan's calendar which is full of pictures of Blackburn. He has a talent for making what I see every day look beautiful.  Then my daughter bought me a llama calendar for Christmas because "she thought it would make me laugh".  She's right - it does!! I'm using both - one is in the kitchen and one in my home office.

So there it all is. It's probably a bit OTT but this is drastically trimmed down from my old systems.  The "live, love, shine" clipboard in the picture was my Secret Santa present from work and it's a pad of to-do lists so I'll leave that in the lounge for notes. I also use Google Calendar on my phone for reminders on the go and I have a separate diary at work.  I'll stop now because I probably look obsessive about planning! But please do let me know what you're using this year.

Planning in 2019 : My annual blog post showing what planners I'm using for this year. I've been working on a couple of new systems and trying out new products so I wanted to settle into everything before I shared pictures and thoughts.
